The latest documentary from Academy Award-winning Moriah Films (
The Long Way Home
) is a chilling but superficial and cinematically overwrought look at modern European anti-Semitism. Examining the facts on the ground in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany,
Ever Again, a play on the “Never Again” slogan that declares that the Holocaust will never be allowed to be repeated, jumps (too) quickly from country to country, incident to incident, horror to horror, to often glancing effect. The many disturbing examples explored in the film, from videogames that mock the Holocaust, to the attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions, to anti-Semitic incitements by Muslim leaders and neo-Nazis alike, certainly make clear how dire the situation is for European Jewry. But its narrow focus on Europe, to the exclusion of the United States and Canada, where anti-Semitism is much less of a problem, skewers the big picture somewhat. More problematically, the film's purple prose and frantic tone paint its sober subject in overly florid colors.
Ever Again
is laudable in its intent but less than impressive in its execution.
