Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) arrives in Palestine just in time to be put in charge of the crucifixion by Pilate. His banishment from Rome has followed a disagreement with the Emperor's son, Caligula (Jay Robinson) who wants Diana (Jean Simmons), an orphan, to marry him. Demetrius (Victor Mature), a Greek slave, who is chosen by Marcellus as his servant, impressively portrays the role of a man who quickly comes under the mystic influence of the followers of Christ and restores Marcellus to sanity, when he realizes he has shared in the most infamous execution in all history.
