The Ugly

This psychological horror/thriller, whose title is a twisted allusion to the classic children's tale "The Ugly Duckling," is about a switchblade-wielding compulsive killer, Simon (Paolo Rotondo), and the psychologist, Karen (Rebecca Hobbs), whom he personally chooses to evaluate him. The flashbacks that are conjured during their sessions drudges to the surface the reasons behind Simon's random murders. The bleeding victims and the brutality of the drone-like wards make this film perpetually disturbing, but at the same time it keeps the audience reasonably interested in knowing more about the visitors Karen starts to see as she probes deeper into Simon's mind.    Starring Paolo Rotondo, Rebecca Hobbs, Jennifer Ward-Lealand and Roy Ward. Directed and written by Scott Reynolds. Produced by Jonathan Dowling. A Trimark release. Psychological horror. Rated NC-17 for several graphic bloody scenes of brutal violence. Running time: 93 min.
