Zoom

Earth is faced with certain destruction -- that's a given. For that matter, in all superhero action adventures that would be something of a given. The earth, or some larger portion of it, will always be threatened with certain destruction, and the superhero(es) will always have to marshal their superhero powers to save it.

So… the earth is threatened with certain destruction, and former superhero, the once faster-than-light Captain Zoom (“The Shaggy Dog's” Tim Allen) is called to train a rag-tag band of kids (Spencer Breslin, Kate Mara, Ryan Newman and Michael Cassidy) to save us all. They each possess a unique special power that sets them apart from everybody else their age, but mostly they'd just like to be regular kids. Their powers, while certainly superhuman, aren't particularly original: strength, invisibility, overt-expansion, etc. There is a long and complicated backstory that sets up the entire Captain Zoom persona, his battle with archenemy Concussion that killed his Zenith Team and left him triumphant but powerless and of no more use to the government. And thus cynical and reluctant. It's all pretty trite in the annals of superhero lore, which leaves “Zoom” a movie dependant on other elements to make its case, elements that are as scarce in this film as kryptonite on a yellow sunned planet. The kids are cute, Allen is affable and charming, and Chevy Chase shows flashes of his old brilliance, but mostly it's a little kid movie with bad CGI effects and nary a moment of real jeopardy or emotion. Odd that a cartoon (see: “The Incredibles”) did all of the human dynamics better, without any actual humans onscreen. Starring Tim Allen, Courteney Cox, Chevy Chase, Spencer Breslin, Kevin Zegers, Kate Mara, Michael Cassidy, Ryan Newman and Rip Torn. Directed by Peter Hewitt. Written by Adam Rifkin and David Berenbaum. Produced by Todd Garner, Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd. A Sony release. Action-adventure comedy. Rated PG for brief rude humor, language and mild action. Running time: 83 mins
