Playing the part of the big city here is a Los Angeles where all somebody needs to know about somebody else (or more precisely, needs to know to separate the somebodies from the nobodies) can be found in the answers to two questions: “What do you do for a living?” and “What car do you drive?”?
Willing to go to any lengths (indeed, Brenda's mantra is “the ends justify the means”) to come up with better answers, the childhood chums commit insurance fraud to generate the startup capital for an executive search firm. Present-day scenes of the shallow supposed soul mates' more and more morally compromised lives are intercut with flashbacks of their middle-school years in Eugene, Ore., that ultimately reveal that it's not so much that they like each other that makes them best friends as much as it is that nobody else likes them.
“Will you stick with me, no matter what?” Brenda asks on more than one occasion.
Unfortunately for the filmmakers, the audience's answer may well be “no.”
