"Reno: Rebel Without a Pause" works because Reno doesn't become smug or sanctimonious towards the audience. She's unresolved--as many of us are--crying to the sound of Celine Dion singing "God Bless America," and yet appalled by her reaction to the song at the same time. Reno brings to life the everyday neurosis of being a New Yorker and then satirizes it in the context of 9/11.
Director Nancy Savoca does little more than point her camera and shoot. But that's okay. She clears space for this whirlwind comedian to set loose a hurricane of primal emotions. Starring Reno. Directed by Nancy Savoca. Written by Reno. Produced by Richard Guay. No distributor set. Comedy. Not yet rated. Running time: 75 min.
