The mayhem begins when a rural fishing community is pelted with meteorites that cause the dead to reanimate. Local beauty queen Rene (Felicity Mason) and a few others trying to get out of town take shelter in an isolated farmhouse owned by the town crazy, Marion (Mungo McKay), who seems to be some sort of ninja-hillbilly. Together, they battle their way through a plague of walking dead with pretty much the typical results. Eventually, they discover that there's a lot more going on than just the dead coming back to life.
"Undead" is part of a lineage of zombie films stretching back to George Romero's original "Night of the Living Dead," which itself has been remade and sequeled many times, including the recently released "Land of the Dead," a big-budget take written and directed by Romero himself. The brothers who independently produced this Aussie version had a lot less to work with, but get a lot out of it and add a twist or two. Though it sometimes veers toward the ludicrous, at least it's never uninteresting. Starring Felicity Mason, Mungo McKay, Rob Jenkins and Lisa Cunningham. Directed and written by Peter and Michael Spierig. Produced by Peter and Michael Spierig. A Lions Gate release. Horror/Comedy. Rated R for strong violence and gore, and for language. Running time: 100 min
