RUSSIA: An $8.4M Debut is the Biggest Overseas Opening for 'After Earth'

AE-3.jpgA big weekend in Russia came as a breath of fresh air for After Earth, which led the Russian box office by a considerable margin in its opening frame. The sci-fi film took the top spot with an $8.4 million debut, nearly three times the weekend gross of second place film The Hangover Part III. The adult comedy took in a healthy $3 million in its sophomore weekend, a 65% drop from its successful Russian premiere. The Hangover Part III has grossed a total of $14.2 million in Russia.

Epic continued its great run in Russia with a third place showing after a $2.1 million weekend. The animated film has been in release for three weeks and grossed a total of $11.5 million; Russia is the second biggest overseas market for Epic, following the United Kingdom. Fast & Furious 6 is still well above all the other films in the top ten with a $31.5 million cumulative gross after a fourth place showing that brought in $1.7 million over the weekend. The Great Gatsby broke the $15 million mark over the weekend, after placing in fifth with its first weekend grossing under $1 million. The Great Gatsby is currently showing a 33% lead in total gross over Star Trek Into Darkness. Both films premiered in the same weekend last month. Star Trek Into Darkness is in the last moments of its theatrical run in Russia after dropping 84% and posting five-figure weekend numbers. Star Trek Into Darkness has grossed a total of $10 million in Russia.
