'Star Trek Into Darkness' Passes $90 Million MarkMay 21, 2013 12:08 PM

by Daniel Garris

Paramount's Star Trek Into Darkness took in $7.98 million on Monday to lead the daily box office for a fifth consecutive day. The second installment of the re-launched sci-fi franchise fell 63 percent from Sunday, as Monday's grosses in general received a boost from the Victoria Day holiday in Canada. Midweek daily holds for Star Trek Into Darkness should also be boosted by the film skewing heavily towards older moviegoers and from the film's continued IMAX grosses.

Star Trek Into Darkness topped the $90 million mark yesterday. Through five days of release Star Trek Into Darkness has grossed a softer than expected $91.68 million. Star Trek Into Darkness is currently running 2 percent behind the $93.21 million five-day take of 2009's Star Trek, 36.5 percent behind the $144.39 million five-day start of 2003's The Matrix Reloaded and 40 percent ahead of the $65.32 million five-day gross of 2003's Terminator Salvation.

Disney's Iron Man 3 placed in second with $3.21 million. The third installment of Marvel's superhero franchise fell 70 percent from Sunday and a healthy 30.5 percent from last Monday. Iron Man 3 has grossed a massive $340.87 million in 18 days of domestic release. That places the film 35 percent ahead of the $253.24 million 18-day take of 2010's Iron Man 2 and 26 percent behind the $463.35 million 18-day gross of last year's Marvel's The Avengers.

Warner's The Great Gatsby experienced one of the day's stronger daily holds among wide releases, as it was down 60 percent from Sunday to place in third with $2.72 million. The Baz Luhrmann directed film starring Leonardo DiCaprio was down 38 percent from last Monday. The Great Gatsby continues to exceed expectations with an eleven-day start of $93.399 million and is now just $6.60 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone.
