'Captain America 2' #1 on Monday with $3.46M; 'Rio 2' #2 with $2.67MApril 15, 2014 12:18 PM

Captain America: The Winter Solider led the way on Monday with $3.46 million. The blockbuster 3D superhero sequel from Disney and Marvel was down 70 percent from Sunday and down 44 percent from last Monday. It should be noted that Monday's daily percentage holds were stronger than usual in general due in part to Holy Week. Captain America: The Winter Soldier has grossed a strong $162.35 million through eleven days of release. That places the film 10 percent ahead of the $147.31 million eleven-day take of last year's Thor: The Dark World.

Fox's Rio 2 placed in second with $2.67 million. The 3D computer animated sequel from Blue Sky Studios was down 77 percent from Sunday, which represented the day's poorest daily percentage hold among wide releases. Rio 2 topped the $40 million mark yesterday and continues to run towards the lower end of pre-release expectations with a four-day start of $41.995 million. That places the film a slim 1 percent behind the $42.497 million four-day take of 2011's Rio (which fell 71 percent on its first Monday to gross $3.27 million).

Oculus claimed third place with $0.946 million. The low-budget R-rated horror film from Relativity was down 64 percent from Sunday, which was among the day's stronger daily percentage holds. Oculus has grossed a solid $12.95 million in its first four days of release. That places the film essentially on par with the $12.899 million four-day start of House at the End of the Street, which was released by Relativity back in September of 2012.

Fellow new wide release Draft Day landed in fourth with $0.873 million. Lionsgate's modestly budgeted sports drama starring Kevin Costner was also down 64 percent from Sunday. Draft Day has grossed $10.66 million in four days. That is a bit below pre-release expectations and places the film 19 percent behind the $13.11 million four-day take of recent Costner vehicle 3 Days to Kill.

Paramount's Noah rounded out the day's top five with $0.709 million. The Darren Aronofsky directed biblical epic starring Russell Crowe was down 69 percent from Sunday and down 44 percent from last Monday. Noah has grossed $85.68 million in 18 days, which leaves it $14.32 million away from reaching the $100 million domestic milestone.

Divergent placed in sixth with $0.669 million. Lionsgate's successful young adult adaptation starring Shailene Woodley fell 65 percent from Sunday and a slim 17 percent from last Monday. The 25-day total for Divergent stands at $125.43 million.
