'Star Trek Into Darkness' Crosses $100 Million DomesticallyMay 23, 2013 06:15 AM

by Shawn Robbins

Star Trek Into Darkness grabbed another $5.327 million on Wednesday, crossing the $100 million domestic barrier in the process. Paramount reports a $103.77 million 7-day start for the J.J. Abrams-helmed sequel. Into Darkness currently trails The Matrix Reloaded by 34 percent through the seven-day period. 2009's Star Trek tallied $104.6 million in its first week. After an underwhelming opening weekend, Into Darkness has posted solid daily numbers. Memorial weekend could continue that trend for the well-received film, but the amount of competition entering the marketplace will make it a big challenge.

As noted earlier this morning, The Hangover Part III grossed $3.1 million in late Wednesday/early Thursday previews. That's a far cry from Part II's $10.4 million back in 2011, however, that film's Thursday release date was established well in advance of release where Part III's was only recently changed this month. Still, the franchise's upfront demand has diminished significantly and the flick will need very positive word of mouth to carry it once Fast & Furious 6 opens on Friday.

Warner Bros.' The Great Gatsby eased 41 percent Wednesday-to-Wednesday with $2.31 million banked yesterday. The film's domestic cume now stands at $98.57 million after 13 days in release. With solid word of mouth and strategic counter-programming for adult audiences, the film should continue showing strong staying power through the holiday weekend. Baz Luhrmann's film is expected to cross the $100 million threshold on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Disney reports that Iron Man 3 tallied $2.26 million yesterday, down 42 percent from last Wednesday. Through 20 days of domestic release, the Marvel sequel has amassed $345.88 million. That puts the film 27 percent behind The Avengers and 35 percent ahead of Iron Man 2 through the same point in their release cycles.
