The American remained in first place at the daily box office for the fourth straight day on Tuesday. The modestly budgeted George Clooney vehicle from Focus grossed $1.07 million. That was down 69 percent from Monday and outpaced Fox's Machete by a slim $60,662 for the day. The American cleared the $20 million mark yesterday and grossed $20.88 million in its first week of release. Thus far The American is exceeding expectations slightly; as well the seven-day starts of recent Clooney films such as last year's The Men who Stare at Goats and 2008's Leatherheads.

Machete experienced one of Tuesday's better holds, as it was down 62 percent from Monday to gross $1.01 million. That was good enough to keep the Robert Rodriguez directed film in second place for the day. While Machete experienced a good hold on Tuesday, at this point it is less an indication of word of mouth going forward and more an indication that the film didn't receive the type of holiday bump from family audiences that a number of films saw on Monday. Machete has grossed a respectable $15.12 million in its first five days, placing it 9 percent ahead of the pace of 2007's Grindhouse.

Takers held steady in third place with $0.78 million. Sony's ensemble crime film was down 71 percent from Monday and down 55 percent from last Tuesday. With the summer box office season now officially over, declines from last Tuesday were high in general. Takers has exceeded expectations significantly thus far and topped the $40 million mark yesterday. The 12-day gross for Takers stands at $40.77 million.

Warner's Going the Distance finished in fourth with $0.62 million. On the heels of a lackluster start this past weekend, the R-rated romantic comedy was down 62 percent from Monday. Despite playing in 3,030 locations, Going the Distance has managed just $9.12 million in its first five days of release.

The Expendables rounded out Tuesday's top five with $0.50 million. Lionsgate's ensemble action film was down 71 percent from Monday and down 53 percent from last Tuesday. The Expendables has now grossed a better than expected $94.38 million through 26 days of release. That leaves the film only $5.62 million away from reaching the $100 million milestone.

After experiencing one of the holiday weekend's better holds, Inception grossed $0.33 million on Tuesday. Warner's sci-fi blockbuster has now grossed $278.79 million domestically. After grossing $24.4 million over the weekend internationally, the film's international total now stands at $418.9 million. With a worldwide gross of $697.7 million, Inception is now on the verge of reaching the $700 million worldwide milestone.
