'The Vow' Set To Barely Finish Ahead Of 'Safe House'February 11, 2012 08:27 AM

by Phil Contrino

With $15.350 million in the bank on Friday, The Vow is on pace to claim the #1 spot during its debut frame. Word-of-mouth is off to a solid start for the romantic drama thanks to an 82% approval rating from more than 16,200 Flixster users. There's no doubt that The Vow will top the $30.5 million debut of Dear John, the film that currently represents the best opening for Screen Gems.

Safe House isn't far behind The Vow, and there's still a chance it could pull of a #1 finish. Universal's CIA flick managed a healthy $13.8 million on Friday. Safe House is on pace to be Denzel Washington's best opening since 2007's American Gangster tallied $43.6 million. Nearly 15,000 Flixster users have combined to give Safe House a mediocre 69% approval rating.

Journey 2 and The Phantom Menace 3D are also running very close to each other. The Phantom Menace 3D raked in $8.650 million on Friday, and Journey 2 isn't far behind with $6.570 million. If families show up today and tomorrow for The Phantom Menace 3D, then it could gain a bigger lead over Journey 2.
