CINEDIGM ACQUIRES NEW ARTIST ALLIANCE’S THRILLER, “STATIC,” IN SWEEP OF MAJOR SXSW DEALS FOR INDIE STUDIO
March 19, 2013
LOS ANGELES - March 19, 2013 - New Artists Alliance, the independent studio behind the recent sales of MILO and CHEAP THRILLS at SXSW, has finalized a deal with Cinedigm, who will take North American distribution rights to the 3D thriller STATIC. The feature was written by Todd Levin, Gabriel Cowan, John Suits, and Andrew Orci, and stars Milo Ventimiglia, Sarah Shahi, Sara Paxton, and William Mapother. Levin directed the film. The story follows a young couple, played by Ventimiglia and Shahi, on the verge of divorce after losing their child. Their world changes when a young visitor arrives, bringing supernatural implications to the household.
Cowan and Suits of New Artists Alliance produced alongside Orci. Executive producers include Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller of Caliber Media Co., along with Kerry Johnson, Ventimiglia and his DiVide Pictures producing partner, Russ Cundiff.
The deal was negotiated by Cinedigm's Vincent Scordino and Kristin Harris with Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content.
In addition to presenting STATIC, New Artists Alliance made a major impact at this year's SXSW, where they were involved in the two largest sales of the festival: CHEAP THRILLS (which won the Midnighters audience award and was produced alongside Snowfort Pictures' Travis Stevens) to Draft House Films, and MILO (produced alongside the Duplass Brothers) to Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia. In addition to the two at SXSW, Cowan and Suits produced 5 films this past year, including 3 NIGHTS IN THE DESERT with Wes Bentley and Amber Tamblyn which Cowan directed, ABBY IN THE SUMMER with Jaime Pressly, Robin Thicke and Joey Lauren Adams, and THE SCRIBBLER, which Suits directed, that stars Katie Cassidy, Eliza Dushku, Michael Imperioli, Gina Gershon and Garret Dillahunt. NAA will soon release EXTRACTED, a science fiction thriller that premiered at SXSW 2012 and is receiving a theatrical release from Phase 4 this summer. Cowan and Suits are in pre-production with the production company Parts and Labor on the indie feature WHY NOW starring Marisa Tomei and Sam Rockwell.
