'Brave' to give Pixar yet another notch in its belt

on June 21, 2012 by Alex Edghill

upcoming062212.jpgThursday Morning Update: Like all the new openers on Wednesday Brave saw a decline in traffic as it rang up 5,266 tweets and 3.55% market share. This was off 7% from Tuesday's 5,671 tweets and 5.34% market share. By comparison, Cars 2 had 8,347 tweets its Wednesday before release, Madagascar 3 had 7,041 and Toy Story 3 had 17,346.  While the Pixar name does carry a lot of weight the fact that this isn't a sequel will suppress its ratio somewhat on the weekend. While my three comparisons all held ratios in the 1,250 to 1,500 range I could see this coming in at around the 1,000 mark thanks to this fact. With a projected total of 21,000 by the end of day Thursday it should be able to grab $21 million on Friday and $59 million over the full weekend.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter dipped 4% on Wednesday to 3,020 tweets and 2.03% market share, down from Tuesday's 3,138 tweets and 2.95% market share. By comparison, Jonah Hex had 1,425 tweets its Wednesday before release, and Priest had 1,690. While the overall number is very solid the fact that a fanboy film has dipped, albeit slightly, for the last two days is somewhat troubling. Successful films in the genre are usually characterized by their explosiveness on social media but that has been sorely lacking.  So far on Thursday its slightly up but its also not exploding anywhere. I don't think this is going to flop like Hex but with a projected week total of ~13,000 and a ratio of 2,500 expect a modest $5.5 million on Friday and $14 million on the weekend.

While it was the biggest gainer on Tuesday Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World ended up the biggest loser on Wednesday, dropping 29% to 1,075 tweets and 0.72% market share, down from 1,512 tweets and 1.42% market share. By comparison, One Day had 336 tweets on its Wednesday before release and Crazy Stupid Love had 2,297. While there is no Ryan Gosling here I believe the low theater count should act as a great stand in and contribute to making its ratio a similar ~1,500. With 4,500 tweets on the week looking likely expect $3 million on Friday and $8.5 million on the weekend.
