'Magic Mike' takes a commanding lead

upcoming062912.jpgWednesday Afternoon Update: Let me start off by apologizing for the late updates this week. Our numbers engine here at Boxoffice.com is going through a tough time of late which has pushed back the delivery of the Twitter numbers significantly. Hopefully everything will be sorted within the next couple days and things will get back to normal but until then late updates will be the norm!

Magic Mike began its release week with an upcoming release-best 13,991 tweets and 22.51% market share on Monday. The film has been simply monstrous on Twitter and across all social media in general over the last month. Women of all ages are the core demo here, not unlike Tatum's last film The Vow and it is the clear frontrunner to win the weekend based on its Monday numbers. By comparison, The Vow had 21,654 tweets its Monday before its release, and The Lucky One had ~10,000 (approximately since our system was partially down for Monday and Tuesday of its release week). Looks as though Channing Tatum has another huge winner on his hands here.

Ted has been somewhat of a revelation over the last few weeks on Twitter as it really has exploded with each new trailer and TV spot. On Monday it was more of the same as it wrapped its little furry arms around 6,802 tweets and 10.94% market share. This is pretty much the definition of a fanboy film and as such it has been embraced whole-heartedly by the demographic. Comparisons are tough to come by here for the film but Wahlberg's last film Contraband had 1,741 tweets its Monday before release while Kunis' last Friends With Benefits had 3,284. The film has three of the biggest watch-outs for a big ratio ( 1. starpower 2. r-rated comedy 3. fanboy glue in stoner comedy / Seth MacFarlane combo) so I wouldn't be surprised to see it win the highest ratio of the weekend award. Still, this level of buzz only points to great things for its potential. Hard to see how it doesn't top $20 million with solid upside.

Tyler Perry will debut what seems like his 50th movie of the last 10 years on Friday as well in Madea's Witness Protection. Witness Protection managed to secure 1,294 and 2.08% market share on Monday. Perry and Adam Sandler could be brothers in that they, time and time again, seem to defy the odds and deliver hits despise harsh critical reviews. Regardless, Perry is a heavyweight in his own right and has proven repeatedly that he has a significant draw, especially for his comedies. By comparison, Madea's last film Madea's Big Happy Family had 763 tweets its Monday before release, while Tyler Perry's Good Deeds had 462. Great start here for the film which points to another very solid opening for Mr. Perry.

Last up, People Like Us took up last spot as expected amongst the new openers with 317 tweets and 0.51% market share. Clearly going after the older crowd, the film is going to have a hard time filling seats on opening weekend as its leads are hardly box office dynamite and its getting only a moderately wide release. By comparison, last week's Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World had 805 tweets its Monday before release. This will do well to hit the $5 million mark on the weekend with these types of numbers. Don't expect too much out of it.
