Openers boom as big Friday looms for many

on June 28, 2012 by Alex Edghill

upcoming062912.jpgThursday Morning Update: Magic Mike jumped a hefty 93% on Tuesday to 27,037 and 31.12% market share, up from 13,991 tweets and 22.51% market share on Monday. By comparison, The Vow had 55,245 tweets its Tuesday before its release, and The Lucky One had ~12,000 (approximately since our system was partially down for Monday and Tuesday of its release week). Nothing would surprise me at this point with the film as it is clearly dialed in, and the only question is how big will it be able to get. With an expected ratio of ~8,000 look for $11 million on Friday and $29 million on opening weekend which is phenomenal considering the film reportedly cost just $5 million.

Ted had the biggest increase of the new openers on Tuesday as it rose 113% to 14,547 tweets and 16.75% market share, up from 6,802 tweets and 10.94% market share on Monday. Simply wow as it continues to impress online with huge numbers. Not many comedies have managed to top these numbers outside of Hangover II and the similarly internet friendly Project X. By comparison, Project X had 27,184 tweets its Tuesday before release, and Friends With Benefits had 4,967. Wahlberg and MacFarlane's presence should help to attract an older crowd than Project X which will act as a balancing factor and provide a ratio in the range of ~3,500. With that in mind $10 million on Friday and $26 million on the full weekend looks possible.

Madea's Witness Protection grabbed 1,849 tweets and 2.13% market share on Tuesday, up 43% from 1,294 tweets and 2.08% market share on Monday. By comparison, Madea's last film Madea's Big Happy Family had 1,144 tweets its Tuesday before release, while Tyler Perry's Good Deeds had 1,499. I predict its ratio is going to end up at ~600 which is between my two comparisons and would allow it to reach $10 million on Friday and $24 million on the weekend.

Last up, People Like Us nabbed 367 tweets and 0.42% on Tuesday, up a slim 16% from Monday's 317 tweets and 0.51% market share. By comparison, last week's Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World had 1,512 tweets its Tuesday before release while One Day had 366 tweets. With the lack of starpower here I'd expect its ratio to closely mirror that of One Day which should mean $~1.5 million on Friday and $4.5 million on the weekend.
