'Step Up Revolution' continues to impress

on July 24, 2012 by Alex Edghill

upcoming072712.jpgTuesday Morning Update: The Watch began its release week on Twitter with a very strong 4,396 and 3.59% market share. Unfortunately its name is just very common which is bringing in quite a few false positives and to add insult to injury the film had its premiere yesterday as well which also has given it a huge influx. The film is going to appeal to older males and females, likely with a masculine skew thanks to the all star male cast and genre. By comparison, Tower Heist had 843 tweets its Monday before release while 21 Jump Street had 5,494. I think the ratio here is going to be 2k+ thanks to the name woes which puts a severe limiter on its potential, but regardless it should easily beat Step Up and be tops amongst the new openers, albeit a few miles behind the returning Dark Knight Rises.

Step Up Revolution kicked it up a notch on Monday as it rung in with 11,149 and 9.11% market share. Its going to appeal primarily to young girls and as such should have a very hefty ratio upwards of 9-10k. The last film in the franchise Step Up 3D had 2,509 tweets its Monday before release two years ago but since then Twitter has become a ways more popular amongst the demo and this year along we have seen three films with over 11,000 ratios that catered to this demo - The Vow (11,334), Project X (12,556) and Titanic 3D (11,449). Nice to see big numbers here but it still is a longshot to even approach $15 million.
