'The Dark Knight' flashes its mettle

on July 18, 2012 by Alex Edghill

upcoming072012.jpgWednesday Morning Update: The Dark Knight Rises had another monster day on Tuesday as it rose 24% to 31,908 tweets and 41.29% market share, up from 25,689 tweets on Monday but slightly off of its 43.69% market share. The dip in market share is nothing to worry about as the 24% hike was healthy enough and quite a few other films (mainly Step Up Revolution and the last Twilight film) had news which bumped their daily change way above 24%.  By comparison, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part II had 29,594 tweets its Tuesday before release, while The Avengers had 51,744. The Dark Knight is obviously a ways off of Avengers at this point but the silver lining in the numbers would be that its Monday to Tuesday gain was the best amongst the three heavyweights and points to a building buzz for the film, not unlike Nolan's last film; the Twitter sensation that was Inception. Potter's $170 million opening is as good as passed based on these numbers but I'm still a bit skeptical of it being able to reign in Avengers since it is 20 minutes longer and doesn't have the advantage of 3D ticket prices. Even if it doesn't take the all time weekend crown it should be able to take the top opening day of all time away from Potter and could even approach the magic $100 million mark on Friday alone.
