20th Century Fox will hit $1 billion overseas on April 12. They are the first distributor to hit that mark in 2013. The official notes:
This marks the 4th time in the past 5 years when Fox International has been first to cross the $1 Billion GBO mark (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013), with the sole exception being 2012, when Fox International came from behind to win the calendar year in the final weeks of December. We are extremely proud of this accomplishment, as it shows the consistency by which Fox delivers box office results with varying release slates year after year.
This is the 10th year in a row that Fox International has surpassed the $1B GBO mark in a calendar year and 13th time in our storied history.
2013 is the 2nd fastest year in which Fox International reached the $1B GBO mark, the fastest being in 2010, when we reached $1B on Jan. 30 thanks to AVATAR and ALVIN 2. 2013 edged out our prior fastest year, which was 1998, when Fox International reached $1B on April 13, thanks to TITANIC.
The films that helped us reach this milestone include:
LIFE OF PI: $260m earned in 2013 ($485m lifetime)
A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD: $235m
THE CROODS: $225m
FOX INTERNATIONAL PRODUCTION titles: $110m
The balance of GBO came from numerous Fox and Fox Searchlight titles.
